Start and end your holiday in the capital, Tunis. Visit the medina and mosque of Sousse, where Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs have left their mark. Head to the old town of Monastir and impressive El Djem, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the remains of a 3rd-century Roman Colosseum. Visit Sfax on the Gulf of Gabes; Matmata, and the incredible underground village used in the original ‘Star Wars’ movie; and the salt lake of Chott El Jerid, an important oasis on the ancient caravan route between Algeria and Tunisia. Travel by train through the spectacular gorges of Selja and visit the Roman ruins at Sbeitla.
